Butoh workshop: Sharing An Uncertain Space

We are delighted to welcome back guest teacher Helen Smith, visiting from Australia, to lead a morning workshop.
Inspired by the writings of C. Tseng et al*, this workshop investigates on a personal and group level the rich Japanese concept of ma and its power to create connections between dance improvisers and the audience. Typically described in spatial and temporal terms as ‘a gap’ or ‘space between’, the workshop provides a rich and nuanced experience of ma through the varied techniques of group flow, positive and negative space, deep listening, a-tension (attention + tension) and shared moments. Participants will walk away with a deepened and broader understanding of ma and some tools to identify and describe those mysterious moments of ma and togetherness both in their own and others’ performances.
Cost: £25/20/15
