Jeremy Willis: Available Light (UPSTATE ART WEEKEND)

Willis thinks of these paintings as outwardly directed portraits. The level of figuration is variable but all of the paintings depict a light source pointed at the viewer. They interrogate self-location and self-importance. The washes of paint nod to the sublime while aspects of the human figure, framing devices, and elements of trompe l’oeil expose the object nature of the painted surface; positing the viewer in their own physicality. We observe and perceive the sensations of illumination while the light in the room around us remains unchanged.
