“Doug Cox and Sam Hurrie are two veteran bluesmen who’ve been friends so long, telepathy is effortless by now, playing in a spot so beautiful and acoustically rich it re-inspires them with what Buddhists call Beginner’s Mind.”
Spider Robinson

With over a century of music making between them, Doug Cox and Sam Hurrie are avatars of pretty well every style of blues, roots, and acoustic music.
These musical ‘old souls’ came by their expertise the old-fashioned way: endlessly honing their skills during a lifetime of playing and performing. The two musicians first met at a gig on the West Coast’s Powell River in the 1990s and felt an instant connection.
“The music we instinctively wanted to play was blues oriented, but came from the perspective of guys who grew up in the world of rock ‘n’ roll,” Cox said.
For many years they toured all over Canada and even hopped the pond to Europe a few times.
They also had a weekly gig in Comox for seven years, playing at the Edge Pub (which has since burned down). Later, Doug and Sam were regulars at the Cumberland Hotel as well as both taking turns at hosting the now-legendary sessions at the Waverley.
During this time, the duo recorded a few albums together, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and memories.
“Sam moved to the interior a few years back so we don't get to play as often anymore,” Cox relates, “But we both make a point of coming together once every couple of years to catch up and share some music ~ there is NOTHING like playing with old friends!”
Things have come full circle, and Cox and Hurrie will join together for two gigs in August in Courtenay on August 6th as well as sharing the stage at Butchart Gardens with some very special guests, August 7th.
