Exploring Rhythm, Style, and Interaction in Brazilian Music
As part of his current California tour, renowned Brazilian guitarist and educator Julio Lemos joins forces with Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Brian Moran for a dynamic workshop at the Jazzschool in Berkeley. This special session offers an in-depth exploration of Brazilian music in its many forms.
Julio brings deep expertise in both tradition and innovation, having performed with some of Brazil’s most celebrated artists—including Silvério Pontes, Carlos Malta, Daniela Spielman, and the legendary Hermeto Pascoal. He also serves as a professor of music at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), specializing in Brazilian styles, performance, and improvisation.
The workshop will focus on key genres such as samba, choro, and bossa nova, with special attention to rhythmic feel, improvisational language, and the unique roles of each instrument in an ensemble. Participants will explore the musical dialogue that defines these styles, learning how instruments interact and converse within the group setting.
In addition to studying traditional and contemporary repertoire, the workshop will include examples from the modern choro scene. Julio will share insights into his creative process, demonstrating how traditional elements can be expanded into original compositions and personal artistic expressions.
