Fear and Fearlessness: A Meditator’s Approach

“Not knowing the nature of fear, it is impossible to realize fearlessness” - Shambhala proverb
We have all heard that meditation practice can help us with anxiety, but how does that actually work? Do you have to be a really good meditator to get this benefit, and what does that even mean? Can meditation practice help us cope with fears that are deeper than social anxiety, such as fears about the future of our planet? Does fearlessness mean trying to convince ourselves that there is nothing to be afraid of?
If you have wondered about these questions, please join us for this five week exploration. We will consider relevant teachings from the Buddhist and Shambhala traditions, with suggested readings. We will engage in personal and group meditation and contemplation practice, and our conversations will draw from the diverse personal experiences of everyone in the class.
Learning to meet fear with gentleness, awareness and insight leads to the development of unconditional confidence. This is confidence that is not dependent on everything always going our way. This is confidence that will support us in meeting the many challenges of these times.
Five Wednesdays from 6-8 pm starting June 18
