Be sure to bring a chair...just like at the Barn! :)
The year is 1599. The place, London’s newly built Globe Playhouse, where Henry V has just opened. While Shakespeare and his contemporaries verbally spar backstage, a mysterious affliction, spread by bite, has turned the populace outside into ravening beasts. Can the Bard and a surprising collection of historical figures (including Queen Elizabeth herself) survive this terrible plague?
Cast of Characters
William Shakespeare (male presenting, appears mid 30s) - Player, playwright, company member. Fiercely intelligent, proud of his art, and more than a little cynical.
Richard Burbage (male presenting, appears early to mid 30s) - Player and theatre manager. Soft-spoken leader of the troupe who just wants to keep the peace.
Will Kemp (male presenting, appears early 40s) - Player, clown, and Morris dancer. Comes off as a self-centered buffoon, but more insightful and empathetic than he lets on.
John Rice (male presenting, appears late teens) - An apprentice player. Earnest, brave, and a bit in awe of the company elders.
Kate Braithwaite (female presenting, appears 30s) - The attiring woman. Sharp tongued and unwilling to suffer fools, whatever their social rank.
John Sinklo (male presenting, adult age) - A hired player. No scripted lines, but one of the first of the company to fall to the affliction.
Francis Bacon (male presenting, appears late 30s to early 40s) - Lawyer, courier, philosopher. Pompous and self-important, but also coldly logical and calculating.
Sir Robert Cecil (male presenting, appears mid 30s) - The Queen's spymaster.
Queen Elizabeth (female presenting, appears 60s) - The Queen of England. Probably the smartest person in any room, has a cutting wit and no tolerance for sycophancy.
Doctor John Dee (male presenting, appears 60s to 70s) - An astrologer and mathematician. Weary genius, resigned to being dismissed and misunderstood.
Soldier 1 (male presenting, any age) - A recruiting officer. Professional and realistic in the face of danger.
Soldier 2 (male presenting, any age) - A soldier of the Queen's guard. Just doing his job.
Additional Players/Soldiers/Afflicted Townsfolk (any gender, age)
