We are thrilled to welcome John Elliott to St Thomas’ for a Lunchtime Live recital on the Tuba 🎼
John Elliott began his musical journey under the guidance of his father, later studying with Michael Barnes (Philharmonia Orchestra) and John Fletcher at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He landed his first professional role with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra - on the same day he graduated.
Returning to the UK in 1974, John built a rich freelance career in London, performing in West End shows like Billy, Chicago, and Barnum (where he also learned circus skills alongside the cast). He has worked extensively with Kent Opera, Scottish Opera, and spent over 20 years with Glyndebourne Touring Opera.
John’s unique musical versatility has made him a go-to for film and TV work, where he’s played everything from didgeridoo to Ophicléïde—and even performed with a tuba underwater for a Tesco ad. Now semi-retired, he lives in Suffolk with his remarkable collection of over 150 unusual instruments.
📆 Friday 29th August
⏰ 1pm start
📍 St Thomas of Canterbury, Brentwood
🎟️ Entry is free (with retiring collection)
