Unfolding over the course of Valentine’s Day in New Jersey, PONYBOI is a neon-drenched neo-noir set in the Motorola Razr-flipping days of the early ’00s New Jersey. River Gallo stars as Ponyboi, a young intersex sex worker on the run from the mob after a drug deal goes sideways, forcing him to confront his past. Co-written by Gallo, who adapted their own short film, PONYBOI is a deeply personal work for Gallo and and a groundbreaking work of intersex representation. Co-starring Dylan O’Brien as Ponyboi’s goofball pimp Vinny and Victoria Pedretti as Vinny’s pregnant girlfriend, PONYBOI is a showcase for Gallo’s electrifying lead performance. But it’s also a thrilling genre exercise peppered with dark humor, fantasy, and a deeply felt sense of time and place.
