Mindfulness in Action: Music

A monthly class on Wednesday nights on topics related to mindfulness and meditation in our lives. A light meal will be offered at 6:00 pm, followed by the class from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The speaker this evening is Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk.
Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk is Professor of Music and Associate Dean for the UAB Honors College. Twenty years of researching performance anxiety led her to become a Licensed Body Mapping Educator through the Association of Body Mapping Educators, a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a certified meditation teacher. She has presented over 60 mindfulness workshops both in-person and online for music programs in colleges and universities around the country. Featured workshops for musicians include College Music Society, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Voice Foundation, and International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) national conferences. At UAB, she has been featured at the Collat School of Business, the Graduate School, the UAB Resilient Leader series, and as an active partner with the UAB Mental Health Ambassadors. She currently leads weekly meditation for cancer patients through UAB Arts in Medicine and during the academic year she offers short meditations for students in the Honors College through her Wellness Wednesdays program.
Recent featured presentations include numerous national and international conferences such as National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), Honors Education at Research Universities (HERU), and American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). A two-time Fulbright finalist, her workshops have been featured at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) and in summer sessions in Szeged, Hungary.
Dr. Hurst-Wajszczuk served on the national board for two terms as NATS Vice President for Workshops, on the board of Wisconsin NATS, as Alabama NATS Governor, as the Education Chair for Southeastern Regional NATS. From 2021-2024 she served as the Webinar Chair for the Association of Body Mapping Educators. In 2007, she founded the first student NATS group in Alabama and has served as their advisor ever since.
