DAY BOAT: The Arfon (43m) & Drift
Advertisement
The HMT Arfon was a 227-ton steam trawler built in 1908, South Wales. On 30 April 1917, while sweeping for mines laid by German U-boats off the Dorset coast, the Arfon struck a mine south of St Alban's Head. The explosion caused the vessel to sink rapidly, resulting in the loss of ten out of thirteen crew members.
The wreck of the Arfon remained undiscovered until 2014. It lies upright on the seabed at a depth of approximately 43 meters. Despite damage to the bow from the mine explosion, the stern and amidships sections are remarkably well-preserved, with features such as the mine-sweeping gear, deck gun, portholes, and engine room still intact.
IF YOU ARE NOT DEEP CERTIFIED PLEASE DO NOT BOOK ONTO THIS DIVE AS THERE'S NOT MUCH TO SEE ABOVE 40M. PLEASE STICK TO YOUR DEPTH QUALIFICATION FOR THIS DIVE.
