Part of our Saturday Spotlight Talks – a series of engaging sessions that shine a light on fascinating moments in history, heritage, and culture.

In this talk, Judy Stevenson explores the rich and layered history of Sutton Walls hillfort, one of Herefordshire’s most important and enigmatic archaeological sites.

From its Iron Age origins, through early Medieval activity, to its rediscovery in the 20th century, Sutton Walls has held a significance unmatched by most other local hillforts. The site was excavated between 1948–51 by renowned archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon, uncovering traces of 2,000-year-old houses, impressive ramparts, and remarkable artefacts—many of which are now part of the museum’s collections.

Today, the site is protected by Historic England, with ongoing support from the volunteer-run Sutton Walls Conservation Group. This talk will take you through the stories, discoveries, and continuing importance of this hilltop landmark.
