Abhaya Dandekar, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor, and Director of the Plant Transformation Facility, UC Davis, where Professor Dandekar has worked for the past four decades. Dr. Dandekarโ€™s current research connects plant phenotypes to the underlying genetic, physiological and biochemical mechanisms, with a particular interest in walnuts, a significant commercial crop in California. Dr. Dandekar also has significant interest in tissue culture processes, and novel applications of this technique. Prior to his tenure at UC Davis, Dr. Dandekar had previously worked at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, after earning his Ph.D. at the MS University of Baroda, India.

About the UC Davis Plant Transformation Facility

The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Plant Transformation Facility was established at the University of California at Davis to provide cost effective plant transformation and plant cell biology services for the plant research community. The Facilityโ€™s staff has extensive experience in plant transformation, gene editing and plant cell biology techniques for a wide range of crop plants. Staff also have significant expertise in protocol development for a wide range of tissue culture processes including micropropagation, plant regeneration, tetraploidization, protoplast isolation etc.

About The Series: Learn From a Local

Learn from a Local is an on-going speaker series hosted by AgStart, a non-profit organization supporting entrepreneurs advancing innovation in agriculture and food technology (AgriFoodTech). Typically on the 1st Thursday evening of every month, AgStart hosts a local speaker from the AgriFoodTech sector to speak on a topic relevant to our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our goal is to offer a space to connect with local individuals and learn from leaders in our local AgriFoodTech sector on topics relevant to our AgStart community.
