Learn how a cutting machine can make the environment more accessible for people with a variety of disabilities

About this Event

Customization is not only just for fun, but a key part of creating accessibility tools in home or public environments. This class assesses the potential of the Cricut to assist disabled people and their caregivers in providing safer and more fun personal environments.

Topics covered will include:

-Customizing assistive devices for easy identification and self-expression

-Using textured materials and large text stickers to create labels for people with low vision to easily identify items such as buttons and Medic*tion containers

-Creating braille text

-Creating symbolic stickers to make signs, label items, and create communication charts for ASL or nonliterate/nonverbal communication

This class is not project-based, but participants should expect to leave with multiple material samples discussed in the class. We will be using Inkscape and Cricut Design Space software, but participants are not required to bring their own devices. If you would like assistance installing this software on your personal device, please email Gene (Zm9nYm93bGVnYm93IHwgZ21haWwgISBjb20=). Information will be provided on where you can access a cricut locally for no or low cost if you do not have personal access to a machine.
