paintings, prints, and experimental artist books envision a world recovering from human industry amid the throes of climate chaos. He draws on influences from ecological theory, literature, and folk art to create scenes that portray the resilience of the natural world.
He has exhibited internationally and his work has been recognized by grants from the Joan Mitchell and San Francisco Foundations, and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission, as well as by reviews in Art in America, Art Papers, and The Oregonian. Pierce has been an artist in residence at the Djerassi and Ucross Foundations, Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Norway, and a fellow at the Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, where he now serves on the Board of Directors. In 2019 his work was showcased in the Portland Art Museum's inaugural triennial of Northwest Art, titled the map is not the territory... He is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland.
Pierce was the co-founder, with activist Amy Harwood, of Signal Fire, a group that facilitated wilderness residencies and retreats for artists of all disciplines from 2009-19. He was the founding Director of Wide Open Studios, an arts and ecology field program. He currently chairs the low-residency MFA in Visual Studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland.
directs the Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing program at PNCA. LOBE is forthcoming from Widow+Orphan House in fall 2020. His memoir, Wedlocked, was published by Hawthorne Books, April 2013, and it received the 2014 Oregon Book Award in Creative Nonfiction. His chapbook of short prose, Darkmouth Strikes Again, was published by Future Tense Books, summer 2014. His essay “Listen to this” was mentioned as a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2010 , and more recently, “On Navel Gazing” was mentioned as a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2015. He has published prose in Knee-Jerk, Essay Daily, Ghost Proposal, Seattle Review, Salamander, and Forklift, Ohio, among others.
Sara Sutter is a writer and professor in Portland, Oregon.
(1996) is an interdisciplinary artist working in textile and text-based modalities. In the embodied knowledge of fiber arts traditions, they reflect on the nature of relationships, from the personal to the elemental. Ahni moves as a weaver, using opposing axes of thought to form interfaces for communication. They explore themes of coding, word, and body to demonstrate webs of connection and disintegration.
They hold a BFA in Fibers from Savannah College of Art and Design and currently reside in Portland, Oregon. They have taught at Pacific Northwest College of Art, The Independent Publishing Resource Center, Wildcraft Studio School, and Stelo Arts. Engaged, process-based arts faciliation is an essential aspect of their practice.

PNCA’s Low Residency Creative Writing program allows students to build their writing practices with immersive residencies in Portland each summer and winter. This summer's residency is June 20-20. Our faculty include: Alejandro de Acosta, Stephanie Adams-Santos, Sara Jaffe, LaTanya McQueen, Megan Milks, Poupeh Missaghi, Emilly Prado, and Dao Strom. Our guest artists are Ahnika Wood and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. Faculty and guest artists give talks, generative workshops, and public readings---all are free, open to the public.
