About this Event

Daylilies 101 with an Introduction to Hybridizing. Come learn all about daylilies in this fun and informative talk:

Susan Stowe has been growing and hybridizing daylilies for many years and will share her incredible depth of knowledge in this presentation. She will cover their history, basic facts, and what makes them unique—including their many shapes, forms, colors, patterns, and textures. You’ll hear tips on how to grow them, which ones bloom more than once, and how to care for and collect them. She will also provide information about daylily clubs, awards, tools, and where you can go to see great daylily gardens. If you're interested in creating your own daylily varieties, she’ll walk you through the basics of hybridizing—how to cross plants, grow seeds, keep records, and register your new creations.

Your Presenter: Susan Stowe

I grew up on a farm with lots of animals, vegetables and flowers and am now a retired physical education teacher, widow, and grandmother living in Madbury, NH.

My mother was an artist and did all kinds of needlework while my father besides being a farmer, made tools, was an electrician, a gunsmith, a minister, and restored old tractors. You could say that he was “jack of all trades”.

My favorite subject in school was physics and I am an “organization freak”. Thus, I am a combination of my parents, a very “hands on” arts and crafts person who does a lot of gardening and note taking.

I have a passion for hybridizing daylilies and I and am involved in quilt making especially doing antique reproductions.

I have gardened my whole life, collected daylilies for over fifty years and hybridized for twenty years with thirty registered daylilies. I lecture on both passions and continue to hybridize daylilies and make quilts.
