About this Event

HWU Presents: 3rd Annual Battle of the Slush: The Heartache, The Hot, The Happily Ever After

What happens when romance writers hand over their unfinished manuscripts to a panel of literary agents β€” and the audience gets a front-row seat? Pure, heart-pounding slush pile magic.

Join Harlem Writers United for the third installment of our signature event, Battle of the Slush, where real works-in-progress meet real-time critique β€” and everyone walks away with insights, laughter, and a deeper understanding of what makes a story stick.

This year’s theme: The Heartache, The Hot, The Happily Ever After. We’re diving into romance β€” in all its messy, swoony, trope-twisting glory.

How it Works

Writers anonymously submit 3–5 pages of a romance work-in-progress. During the event, our guest judges β€” all NYC-based literary agents β€” read and react live, sharing honest, constructive feedback grounded in what moves the needle for agents and editors today.

This year's featured Guest Judges are:

  • Jenniea Carter (New Leaf Literary)
  • Ellen Goff (HG Literary)
  • Jim McCarthy (Dystel, Goderich & Bourret)

The audience joins the fun, too β€” offering written feedback via printed reading packets and cheering on brave contributors.

Who This is For

  • Aspiring or emerging romance writers interested in traditional publishing
  • Readers curious about what goes into acquiring the next big love story
  • Editors, agents, and publishing folks looking to connect with a vibrant creative community

Feature Social Hour

Our Guest Judges and Featured Slush participants are invited to join us at a nearby spot for an informal happy hour. Drinks are self-pay and the vibe is casual β€” but the connections? Chef’s kiss.

Tickets are limited β€” last year we sold out quickly. This year, we’re expanding our capacity but expect seats to fill fast. Full details will be shared with all registered attendees, otherwise, please see our FAQs for commonly asked questions.
