Your Learning Need(s):

  • Understand the physiology of airway disease, such as tracheobronchomalacia, and how it impacts mechanical ventilator strategy in infants with sBPD.
  • Understand the interplay between hemodynamic and respiratory systems physiologies and how to achieve an optimal balance of support.
  • Appreciate the changing pulmonary physiology of an extremely preterm infant and how ventilator strategy change can optimize overall care for the infant.
  • Recognize the impact of optimal respiratory support on growth and developmental achievement potential.
  • Recognize and anticipate the needs of an infant with sBPD going home on ventilator support.
  • Appreciate the outcomes and desires of families of infants with sBPD.

You Outcome Objective(s):

After participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to:

  • Identify symptoms of airway abnormalities and associated ventilator challenges and alter ventilator support based on this recognition.
  • Screen for hemodynamic compromise in sBPD.
  • Adjust ventilator support in infants with evolving sBPD to improve respiratory physiology.
  • Provide optimal respiratory support to provide opportunity for growth and neurodevelopmental activity and avoid decreases in support prior to infant stability.
  • Provide expectant management to families of infants discharging on home ventilation and optimize care leading to discharge for safe and smooth transition to home.
  • Deliver compassionate care directed toward actual parent and
