"Shedding light on the dual properties of sun and sunlight, the SUNCUTS trio’s Collective Heliophobic Dream translates these concepts into bright and dark sounds. “The band name is evocative since the sun is primordial energy, making life possible, but it also burns and destroys”, notes SUNCUTS drummer Maxime Hänsenberger. “Given what’s happening with climate change, it also makes you think about the loss of energy and lack of light.” At the same time he adds “with its plurality of meanings and ways of interpretation, the name also relates to freely improvised music. It combines the music's cathartic, aggressive nature with its bright side, which while subtle, is embedded in its DNA.” This plurality of geography and interpretation is also how the trio was born with serendipity another factor. Anton Ponomarev, who plays alto and tenor saxophone plus electronics, is a Russian who lives in Zurich, and has worked in bands playing everything from grindcore to free improv with associates ranging from Pussy Riot to Peter Ole Jørgensen. Bassist Zenicola is a Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian who, despite his instrument’s pop music association, is often found in jazz-oriented projects with the like of Yedo Gibson or Paal Nilssen-Love. Biel, Switzerland-based drummer Maxime Hänsenberger also bridges jazz and noise music. Besides working with other groups, he’s also a drum teacher. Scheduled to play a European tour with the members of his Moscow-based trio recently the now Swiss resident Ponomarev found the other two musicians were unable to join him. Hastily recruiting Zenicola and Hänsenberger, precise synergy resulting from their collaboration illuminating each player’s contribution like rays of sunshine. Wanting to quickly capture the interaction, the three recorded this five-track session in Hänsenberger’s home studio. You can sense the intensity and integration starting with “Maw”, the album’s first track. Sudden screams, slides and snorts explode from Ponomarev’s sax as if he was the lead guitarist in a rock power trio. This impression is reinforced as Zenicola lays down a thudding almost never-ending pulse and Hänsenberger contributes rumbles, backbeat shuffles and cymbal pops. However while the saxophonist’s overblowing encompassing spetrofluctuation and nephritic spews seemingly invokes the stomach and intestines as much as the mouth and throat, underlying the piece is a sequence where he trades fours with the drummer as if on a jazz date. And that pivot among genres remains throughout the set. Although the in-your-face sound is as sinewy and spacey as any projected from a Metal or punk band, timbral interactions and sound substitutions are more sophisticated. So are the frequent transitions to unexpected textural reflections. At the end of the extended “Diffused Memory” for instance Zenicola suddenly creates a note perfect walking bass line that could have wandering in from a Hard Bop session, soon intensified with drum clip clops. Earlier on and elsewhere electronic oscillations further slur and blur the trio’s interaction. Sound fragments, including bell and cymbal clangs, string flanges and screaming reed roars intensifying to wolf howls expand group dynamics. Still at the same time tones fragment into unaccompanied sequences briefly expose individual interpretations, that are as quickly reconstituted into the roistering mass. The prime example of this appears on the two-part “Cut Through the Silence”. As the saxophonist constantly advances ascending multiphonic honks and cries while seemingly never stopping for breath, the drummer emphasizes the metallic parts of his kit, and the bassist projects wave form oscillations. But later a squirming countermelody appears, is subsumed under squalls, then reappears again as brief interludes are given over to an inventive hollow drum rumbles and finessed guitar-like sluices from the bassist. As Ponomarev states:” Each SUNCUTS performance is a sonic ritual in which genre boundaries are deliberately shattered. This music is a primal force, yet it’s also sculpted with precision and a sensitivity to dynamics, space, and sound.” A better description of the sun’s and SUNCUTS’ dual powers may not exist.
