Ondanaconda komponiert nicht mit der Maultrommel, sondern durch sie. Für ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum macht das Quartett dieses oft als archaisch empfundene Lamellophon zur einzigen Klangquelle der Platte. Die Maultrommel, die seit Jahrhunderten auf allen Kontinenten von Asien bis Europa zu finden ist, wird an den Zähnen gespielt, wobei der Mund als Resonanzraum dient und der Klang durch Atem und Körperbewegungen geformt wird. Hier, verstärkt, präpariert und manchmal bis an ihre Grenzen getrieben, wird sie zu Percussion, Bass, Drone und Textur – ein wahrer Mundsynthesizer mit unermesslichen Möglichkeiten.

Zwischen Performance und Trance erschafft Ondanaconda ein nicht identifizierbares Klangobjekt, irgendwo zwischen kollektivem Ritual und rohem elektroakustischem Experiment. Jedes Stück entsteht aus spezifischen Instrumentenkombinationen, die klangliche Affinitäten und rhythmische oder harmonische Potenziale ausloten, dabei aber Raum für Abdriften und Improvisation lassen. Wiederholung fungiert als instabiler Motor, der Muster verbiegt, bis sie sich in etwas anderes verwandeln.

Gemeinsam weben Laurent Bruttin, Antoine Läng, John Menoud und Daniel Zea eine dichte, sich wandelnde Masse, in der sich einzelne Stimmen in einer organischen, fast halluzinatorischen Polyphonie auflösen. Als Kontinuum konzipiert, entfaltet sich das Album als hypnotischer Fluss, als physische und immersive Musik, die sich vom Mund zum Körper bewegt und den umgebenden Raum durchdringt. Ein radikales UFO an der Schnittstelle von Konzert, Performance und Klanginstallation.
