De jonge, opkomende bariton James Newby en de gevierde gigant Malcolm Martineau slaan tijdens dit bijzondere recital een brug tussen verleden en heden. Ze doen dat met werken van hun landgenoot Benjamin Britten – zonder twijfel één van de meest vernieuwende en originele componisten van de twintigste eeuw – en Franz Schubert.

Op de eerste pagina van zijn Songs & Proverbs of William Blake schreef Benjamin Britten: ‘For Dieter: the past and the future’. ‘Dieter’ is de bariton Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau die dit werk zestig jaar geleden in première bracht met de componist zelf aan de piano. Door het nu te programmeren brengen we een kleine hommage aan de gevierde, Duitse zanger die honderd jaar geleden – op 28 mei 1925 – werd geboren. Britten creëerde met deze indrukwekkende liedcyclus een intense beschouwing op de toestand van de wereld en de kwetsbaarheid van de mens.

Diezelfde kwetsbaarheid staat in de Schubertliederen die je voor de pauze hoort centraal. En ook op die manier slaan Newby en Martineau een brug tussen verleden en heden. Je hoort namelijk precies dezelfde liederen die Fischer-Dieskau en Benjamin Britten samen uitvoerden op 8 juni 1972 tijdens het roemruchte festival in de Snape Maltings Concert hall in Aldeburgh. Een festival dat geschiedenis schreef door de spannende combinatie van oude en nieuwe muziek, met wereldberoemde artiesten en jonge aanstormende talenten. Na 53 jaar is dat nog net zo actueel als toen en roepen we de festivalsfeer uit de jaren zeventig op in Zeist.
