Their ecological importance and broad distributions are inpart due to their remarkable adaptations, even leading some to be problematic invaders. In this presentation, I will discuss what makes these crustaceans so interesting to science and yet sometimes so troublesome. I will focus on two iconic species – the Atlantic blue crab and the Caribbean spiny lobster. Both are home to the western Atlantic but the blue crab has become all too well known in the wider Mediterranean Sea, where its invaded range continues to expand. Crabs and lobsters are not without their enemies, including pathogens and parasites, and the research I will touch on is aimed at understanding how these crustaceans adapt to and are potentially controlled by this particular suite of enemies. Bio: Dr. Behringer is a Professor of Marine and Disease Ecology in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences at the University of Florida, where he also holds a joint appointment in the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute. He received his B.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. degree in Ecological Sciences from Old Dominion University. Research in his lab focuses on disease and invasion ecology, and the interactions between these under changing environmental conditions. He and his students use lobsters, crabs, sea urchins, crayfish, finfish, sponges and other organisms to answer fundamental and applied scientific questions around the globe. Dr. Behringer is an internationally recognized expert in disease ecology and has worked with colleagues from around the world and published > 90 scientific articles and book chapters. He also teaches internationally, taking students on experiential learning explorations to the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.
