- **Event Name**: Bees, Birds, & Butterflies: Pollinators of Joshua Tree National Park
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 16 May, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sat, 16 May, 2026 at 02:00 pm (-07:00)
- **Event Description**: Discover the vital role of pollinators in Joshua Tree National Park in the beautiful Black Rock area. Participants will learn about the park’s native pollinators — bees, butterflies, moths, birds, and more — and their unique adaptations to desert life. Explore the intricate relationships between pollinators and plants like the iconic Joshua tree and creosote bush. This course offers a deeper understanding of desert ecology, pollinator conservation, and how these small creatures have a big impact on the Mojave ecosystem. This class takes place in the Black Rock area of Joshua Tree National Park, with the indoor lecture portion being held in the Black Rock Nature Center. Anyone may attend! No experience or expertise is required. Park pass not included and not required for this area of the park. No meals or equipment are provided. The indoor portion of this class is ADA accessible. It requires very little travel with ADA accommodations, such as accessible parking, available. This class is easy to moderate. It requires less than 5 miles of walking with limited elevation gain on somewhat variable terrain and/or more than one hour outdoors in the elements. Activities can be modified to accommodate participants. Please email desertinstitute@joshuatree.org if you need specific accommodations. Meet Your Instructor! Scott Heacox is a professional field biologist, desert ecologist, and Mojave Desert native. He works with a wide variety of plants and animals but has a particular passion for the study of insects. His goal is to teach about the small, overlooked, and extremely misunderstood inhabitants of our deserts in order to reframe the way we see the world around us. Scott spends most of his time working in the Colorado and Mojave Deserts of California but has also studied the biology of other areas of the American Southwest, Central America, and Southeast Asia. Equipment list: A minimum of 2 to 3 liters of water, food and snacks, closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots — no sandals are permitted, including hiking sandals, sun protection, including hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — light-colored long-sleeved shirts are recommended, daypack to carry equipment and personal items, notebook and writing utensil.
