                "description": "My martial arts journey began at age 9 when my father, Joseph Phebus, introduced me to the mats. Growing up, I fell in love with wrestling and spent weekends competing in kickboxing and boxing smokers. As my dad’s gym grew, we added jiujitsu and judo, training under an unforgettable cast of instructors: Saul Galindo (MMA), Grandmaster Pierce (Kajukenbo), Carlson Gracie Jr., Andre Huebes, and Donald Rucker (BJJ). I even sharpened my kickboxing under Lithuanian world champion Kestutis.We fought in countless MMA, pankration, Muay Thai, and boxing bouts. Through it all, my father taught me the real lessons—how to handle failure and success, how to give and take on and off the mats. Now, with about 20 years of training behind me, I’ve come full circle.Since 2018, I’ve dedicated myself to teaching martial arts to special needs kids and young adults. These classes go far beyond technique—they build real confidence, coordination, and resilience in those who are often overlooked. The work is profoundly fulfilling; I learn just as much from my students about patience, joy, and true strength as they learn from me on the mats.From backyard wrestling to the gym to empowering the next generation through my special needs program, martial arts has shaped who I am—and continues to give me purpose every single day.
