About this Event

Words Matter Lecture: First Ladies in Popular Culture: Fashion, Film, and Fiction

This year’s Words Matter Lecture will be delivered by Professor Anne-Marie Evans and will explore the representation of First Ladies in Popular Culture. After the lecture you are invited to join us for a drinks reception.

The role of the First Lady in US culture has often been perceived as ambiguous and even problematic, as she is part of the executive branch only because of her husband’s role as President. As a figure, the First Lady has huge cultural power and influence, and is never out of the spotlight. In this lecture, Professor Anne-Marie Evans will explore the range of ways in which America’s First Lady has been depicted on film and in a variety of popular novels. From entirely fictional First Ladies to imaginative reconstructions of the real-life women who served in this role, this talk will consider how this figure has been perceived and interrogated by filmmakers, writers, and fashion designers.

Speaker

Anne-Marie Evans is Professor of American Literature and Pedagogy, and is Head of the School of Humanities at York St John University. Her research interests focus on American women writers and material culture, and she is in the final stages of co-editing a collection of essays exploring representations of the First Lady.
