- **Event Description**: To examine occupational justice and its role in enabling healthy ageing for older adults in underserved communities.About this EventScience tells us that longevity can be improved through healthy eating, physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social connection. Yet for older people in underserved communities, opportunities to engage in health-promoting activities are often limited by poverty, social isolation, inaccessible environments, and competing priorities such as choosing between heating and food. Activities that lack personal meaning may further reduce motivation and wellbeing. This lecture critically examines the concept of occupational justice, the right of all people to participate in meaningful daily activities they want, need, and are expected to do to reach their full potential. It explores how occupational injustice contributes to health inequalities and considers the implications for healthy ageing, particularly when working with older adults in underserved communities.SpeakerNicola Plastow is an Associate Professor of occupational therapy and clinical academic at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. With over two decades of experience working with underserved communities in the North of England and South Africa, her work focusses on using Afrocentric approaches to promote health, wellbeing , and occupational justice in education and clinical practice. This event is free and welcomes learners, apprentices, occupational scientists, occupational therapists, and allied health professionals interested in promoting equity, participation, and wellbeing in later life.Timings and RefreshmentsThis event will finish at 5.00pm and will be followed by drinks and networking from 5.00pm - 6.00pm for all attending.Venue: De Grey 124, York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, YO31 7EX.Events Access & InclusivityAt York St John University we are committed to making our events as welcoming and inclusive for as many people as possible. If you are planning to attend one of our events and have specific access requirements, including wheelchair access, then please contact us by e: events@yorksj.ac.uk or t: 01904 876318 and we will make every effort to accommodate you.If you need a suitable seat reserved for you (and your companions), please let us know, preferably at least one week before the event.
