York Land Trust's Near Point Preserve offers a scenic 1 mile loop through meadows and forest along Smelt Brook, with views of expansive marshlands and a pond. A wooded path leads to a salt marsh that offers habitat for blue herons, night herons, white egrets and the rare saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow. Bobcat, river otters, and fox have also been spotted along the brook, which is a major tributary of the York River. The surrounding meadows provide forage for a variety of songbirds that nest on the property.
