June 1 - Aug 31 2025
ATMOSPHERE centers on the subtle interplay of light, land, and air along the Maine coast and beyond-where land meets water, and stillness is rarely empty. These paintings capture the moments just before or after something shifts: when fog hasn’t quite lifted, the moon just clears the trees, or a house sits at the edge of light. Not grand scenes, but ones that hold weight. Whether it’s a red buoy marking safe passage or the soft geometry of a winter marsh, each subject becomes a
conversation between presence and quiet. At the core of this work is contrast-structure and softness, light and dark, movement and pause. Landscapes here often hold both tension and calm: a dock disappears in a storm, a road curves too sharply near the sea, a distant boat hovers in fog like a thought not yet spoken. These elements appear not for their drama, but for what they reveal about the fragile and resilient nature of place. Though rooted in observation, the paintings are not documents. The show takes its name from what drives the work—the atmosphere of a moment. Weather, time of day, the way the air feels just before something shifts. These aren’t simply backdrops; they’re part of the story. Each picce attempts to hold those fleeting impressions a little longer. If something resonates, it may be because these quiet thresholds— between light and shadow, clarity and haze—are ones we all
know intimately.
Please join us for the opening of our summer show ATMOSPHERE. This event takes place on June 7th 5-9 at 2 Southside Road in York. Exhibit run through end of August.
About the artist:
Kim Case is a Maine-based oil painter whose work explores atmosphere, memory, and the tension between structure and softness in the natural world. Her paintings often emerge from the quiet thresholds of coastal life—marshes at dusk, moonlit harbors, or the moment a road curves just before the sea. Working from her home studio in Cape Elizabeth, she captures not only the landscapes of Northern New England but the emotional presence they carry.
Before turning full attention to painting, Kim built a career shaped by visual storytelling, place-based work, and a deep appreciation for both the seen and the felt. She studied at the SALT Institute for Documentary Studies, focusing on the lives of hardworking Mainers in island and mountain communities. Her time as a hut keeper with the Appalachian Mountain Club in New Hampshire’s White Mountains deepened her love for the rugged terrain of New England—an affinity that continues to inform her work. She later owned an art gallery in Portsmouth, where she co-founded Art-Round Town, a monthly gallery walk in the idyllic seaside community. From her Boston studio, she helped lead the evolution of wedding photography at the turn of the millennium—pioneering digital tools, photojournalistic techniques, and women-led creative teams long before they became industry norms.
Kim also brings a lifelong love of print and narrative to her practice. She served as editor-in-chief of Accent Magazine, an award-winning home and garden publication, and as publisher and board member of the Cape Courier, a beloved local newspaper. While deeply rooted in New England, she comes from a family that traveled widely. Today, she continues that tradition with her own family, often designing trips around the magnetic pull of world-class museums in Europe and the Americas. She has studied art in England, Santa Fe, and other locations that, like her paintings, offer a quiet intersection of history, weather, and wonder.
Kim has been represented by several distinguished galleries since 2010 including The Portland Art Gallery in Portland ME, Surroundings Gallery in Sandwich NH, the Patricia Ladd Gallery in Sandwich NH, and The Blue Door Gallery, where her newest series, Atmosphere, will debut in 2025.
