- **Event Name**: Handset: a typographic workshop
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 02 May, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sat, 09 May, 2026 at 03:00 pm (+10:00)
- **Event Description**: Come and roll up your sleeves and experience the authentic experience of Letterpress Printmaking.About this EventAcross two Saturdays—10 am to 3 pm on 2 May and 9 May—you’ll work through the full traditional letterpress process inside Moveable Type Studio’s 40‑foot mobile printmaking container, hosted at The Paint Factory, Yeronga. The container is a fully equipped travelling studio: presses, wood and lead type, pigment kits, and the working ethos of a printshop all housed in one space. Stepping inside naturally slows the pace. Instead of working through screens and quick adjustments, you’re handling type, making small spacing decisions by hand, and seeing how pressure and material shape what appears on the page. The workshop stays close to the practical work and gives you a clear sense of how those choices show up in the final print.Saturday 2 May, 10 am–3 pmThe first session introduces the studio, the tools, and the language of letterpress—from reglets and galleys to spacing systems and typographic quirks like diphthongs. You’ll work with wood and metal type to set and lock up a composition, learning how hierarchy, rhythm, and clarity become physical through spacing and arrangement. The day ends with proofing and refining your layout, preparing it for printing the following week.Saturday 9 May, 10 am–3 pmThe second session focuses on presswork and editioning. You’ll ink, register, and print your design, exploring colour mixing and optional woodblock elements. Alongside the hands‑on work, you’ll gain insight into how traditional craft intersects with contemporary design practice—how small adjustments in pressure, alignment, and pacing influence the final print. By the end of the day, you’ll have a completed edition and a grounded understanding of the full workflow. The workshop is facilitated by design educator and typographer Clint Harvey, founder of Moveable Type Studio, and program coordinator and printmaker Dzintra Menesis, and is limited to 8 participants to allow enough press time and individual support. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events5/banners/915c2860-1f40-11f1-8ce5-afcd59d33ab9-rimg-w1109-h740-dc2d1c13-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/91962420-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1109-h740-dc332d32-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events3/banners/91cf0e70-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1109-h740-dc191617-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/91ff9450-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1109-h740-dc903402-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events4/banners/9234fc30-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1110-h740-dc161515-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events10/banners/926dbf70-1f40-11f1-8ce5-afcd59d33ab9-rimg-w1109-h740-dc302b2e-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events7/banners/92a87e80-1f40-11f1-8ce5-afcd59d33ab9-rimg-w1110-h740-dc2f2e30-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events2/banners/92e1b6f0-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1109-h740-dc181613-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events5/banners/931e23b0-1f40-11f1-a80c-71aa7eb81ff0-rimg-w1159-h740-dc181717-gmir.jpg

"description": "The SPAM Project, spearheaded by design educator Clint Harvey, is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to bridge the gap between modern technology and traditional printing methods. These hands-on workshops will provide participants with an introduction to letterpress printing and traditional typesetting, using both wood and metal type. Through practical exercises and discussions, attendees will delve into the language of typography, explore the anatomy of letterforms, and learn about the myriad of typographic terminologies essential for making informed design choices.Housed within a custom-built 40-foot shipping container, this mobile printmaking studio features authentic 19th-century printing presses and typography archives. The project is a reincarnation of the former Brisbane Bacon Factory and maintains strong ties to the Museum of Printing at the New England Regional Art Museum in NSW (NERAM); the project goal is to bring the art and history of letterpress printing to communities across Australia.Australia’s harsh environment and vast geographical expanse has resulted in a scarcity of letterpress resources and an under-appreciation for the craft. The SPAM Project seeks to address this by offering hands-on exposure to letterpress printmaking, particularly in regional and remote areas where the tradition of letterpress once thrived. Through community outreach and visual arts workshops, SPAM aims to reignite interest in local storytelling through the printed word."
