On February 13, 2026, at 6 PM, YCIE Research Fellow Luka Nakhutsrishvili (Ilia State University, Tbilisi, Georgia) will talk about modernity in mid-nineteenth-century Tsarist Tiflis through the history of the “theatre-caravanserai,” a unique building that combined the region’s first European-style proscenium theatre with a multi-story trade center.

Commissioned by Viceroy Mikhail Vorontsov and funded by the Armenian merchant Gabriel Tamamshian, this hybrid structure was envisioned as a civilizing space seeking to educate “Oriental” merchants in “correct commerce” and to cultivate a “European” theatre-going audience in the administrative capital of the Russian Caucasus. Yet the building’s history from its inception in 1846 to its destruction by fire in 1874 reveals competing imperial and local desires constantly mediated – and constrained – by infrastructural deficiencies.

Drawing on a heterogeneous archive and combining historical ethnography with literary and cultural analysis, this talk presents the “theatre-caravanserai” as a material site that registered the initial dreams, persistent contradictions, and ultimate demise of a once-ambitious project of imperial modernity. 

At the center of this story stands the recurring figure of the Armenian merchant, positioned simultaneously as the target of tsarist modernization efforts and as their ever-unsettling symptom. Understanding this encounter requires moving beyond the currently dominant nationalist frameworks toward a more entangled imperial perspective.
