The Battle of Fromelles took place on 19 July 1916 during World War I. Soldiers of the 5th Australian Division were ordered to attack German positions in French Flanders, but they were exposed to direct observation and heavy fire from the German lines.

Almost 2,000 Australians were killed during the battle and approximately 400 were captured. This is believed to be the greatest loss of life by a single division in 24 hours during the war. The Battle of Fromelles is remembered today as one of the most tragic events in our nation’s history.

Lest we forget.
