Tapping into History

This program will take a hands-on look at the sugaring process, from tapping trees and gathering sap to boiling it down into syrup and sugar. Along the way, we’ll discuss the cultural and historical significance of maple sugar, not only as a staple food source, but as a means of cultural exchange. We’ll also consider its importance in the broader seasonal cycles of Shawnee life, marking the transition from winter hunting camps to the return of larger village life.
