Comenzó su carrera a los 10 años. Es integrante de Los Cojolites, grupo con el que ha sido nominado tres veces al Grammy, y ha participado en agrupaciones como La Candela, Viento de Agua, Los Pájaros del Alba, Los Vega y Río Crecido. Ha colaborado con artistas como Philip Glass, Natalia Lafourcade, Susana Baca, Jorge Drexler, Rubén Albarrán, León Larreguí, Celso Piña, Eugenia León y Zack de la Rocha. Junto a su hermana Carolina dirige el Colectivo Tecalli.Su trabajo se ha centrado en el rescate del violín tuxteco, un instrumento que en la región de Los Tuxtlas era considerado "el rey de los instrumentos" y que hoy está casi desaparecido. Joel aprendió a tocarlo con los últimos maestros vivos, todos mayores de 80 años, y desde entonces se ha dedicado a transmitir ese conocimiento a jóvenes y niños de Santiago y San Andrés Tuxtla. El violín tuxteco —también llamado "yigui yigui"— es pequeño, más parecido al rabel que al violín sinfónico, y se construye con técnica de vaciado, generalmente de cedro.
