About the event
WSO: Women of Note
A feast of music by a wide range of female composers on International Women’s Day, much of it drawing inspiration from the glorious landscapes of Southern England. Ruth Gipps was a close friend of Malcolm Arnold, and together as students they won virtually all the composer prizes at the Royal College of Music. Her Second Symphony, composed in 1945, recalls pastoral idylls, hopes for the future and a heartfelt lyricism reminiscent of her teacher Vaughan Williams. The South Downs inspired Averil Coleridge-Taylor, whilst Phyllis Tate’s music draws its inspiration from the great green spaces of London.
