Jenni is a painter, printmaker and textile artist. She has lived in Worthing for 26 years and during that time worked in various art studios in Worthing, Lancing and Brighton and exhibited widely. Her pieces have found homes as far afield as Orkney, Scandinavia, Spain, the USA and Australia.
Jenni says; “This exhibition is a continuation of my previous successful ‘Transience’ show in July, with some new and some larger paintings on the same theme. The works are inspired by photos my husband took of very old, worn, painted wooden doors that had multiple layers of different coloured paint applied over many years. The photos intrigued me and made me think about all the different stages, histories and experiences hidden amongst the images. It occurred to me that we humans are similar to those worn old doors! We too are made up of all the past ‘layers’ in our lives - previous experiences, roles, emotions, relationships and preoccupations. We are not just what is seen now but also all that has gone before. I was reminded of the passing of time, remembrance, impermanence and how transient and ever changing is our existence.
In creating these paintings the physical act of applying layer after layer of paint has become therapeutic and almost meditative. As always for me the process is the compelling part and the finished work is sent out for others to interpret in their own unique way. The viewer may experience something completely different or simply see colour and form. Abstract art is extremely difficult to explain in words. For me it invokes feelings, emotions, intrigue and recognition of something ‘other’.”
