Pick up your book on the day, and join the queue to meet Helen!To try and meet as many of you as possible, Helen will be signing copies of books purchased as part of this event only; please do not bring any additional books along. You may purchase multiple books to be signed, but please keep in mind that spaces are limited.This event follows our gallery talk. Born in Ipswich, Oxenbury suffered from asthma as a child which periodically left her bedridden – drawing became a favourite distraction and lifeline.She enrolled in the theatre arts department at London’s Central School of Art, and in 1957 she met fellow student and illustrator John Burningham, who she would later marry. Upon graduating, Oxenbury joined the Colchester Repertory Theatre and travelled to Habima, Israel’s national theatre, where she became a set designer.After the birth of their first child, Burningham encouraged Oxenbury to try illustrating children’s books herself and she didn’t look back.
