Woodgreen Church's Morning Service Sermon series
1 Peter is a letter written to Christians scattered far and wide who are experiencing grief in all kinds of trials. Peter says that his aim in writing the letter is to help these separated Christians to stand firm in the grace of God.
As we ourselves experience the frustration of being separated physically from each other as a church, the opening chapters of this letter remind us that we are secure in Christ through his death and resurrection. Although we may suffer in the weeks ahead, we have cause to rejoice at what Jesus has done for us in saving us. Whilst we might feel lonely and isolated now, Peter reassures us that we are part of God’s united, holy, redeemed and chosen people.
The Coronavirus reminds us of the truth of Peter’s observation that our health and our life is as frail the grass of the field, and that even our silver and gold is perishable. But in a world where death dominates the headlines, over the next couple of months we will see that Jesus offers a living hope of a glorious eternal inheritance that cannot be touched by death.
In the second half of the book Peter tells more about how we can live God-honouring lives now in the light of the Jesus’ return and how present sufferings are put into a right perspective when weighed against our future hope. Peter also directs us to Christ’s example in enduring unjust suffering in a Godly way, as well as reminding us of the astonishing grace given to us through Jesus’ death in our place, which enables us to enjoy relationship with God now and into eternity.
