Phoenix Theatre Collective present Hans Christian Andersen’s Classic Fairytale, The Snow Queen at The Coach House Theatre, Malvern.
Our story is a well told tale of good and evil centred on the friendship of, Kay and Gerda. It begins when the Snow Queen shatters the ancient Ice Mirror, casting shards of ice across the land, one sliver pierces Kay, corrupting his warm, kind heart, turning his innocence to cold greed - imprisoning him within the Snow Queen’s merciless plans. She needs Kay's innocence to steal the Crystal of Larnia and imprison the sun forever. Her power will be endless in a land frozen, with Kay by her side. She seems unstoppable until Kay’s friend, Gerda, sets out on an epic journey to rescue him, meeting friends and danger along the way. When Gerda finds him, she brings the warmth of love and friendship, ultimately joy melts his icy heart and they escape home together.
London-based, Drama Studio London (DSL) is a leading training institution for professional actors which was established over 50 years ago. “This is the fourth year that Phoenix Theatre Collective has produced the DSL students in a touring pantomime,” said Kirsty Cubberley, producer and director of the pantomime, and Malvern local. “Their past performances have included The Nutcracker, Snow White and, last year Malvern audiences were taken on a high-seas, swashbuckling journey with Treasure Island.”
This year Drama Studio London have toured schools in Ealing, West London before travelling to Malvern to continue a week long tour, performing The Snow Queen at The Coach House Theatre for local schools, residents and clients at Friends of the Elderly’s Malvern-based Davenham, Perrins House and Bradbury Court, the residential, nursing and dementia care homes.
“The day care clients and care home residents all look forward to the annual pantomime performance, it’s always top of the list, and they are all excited to see this year’s production of The Snow Queen” said Shirley Bradbury, Head of Day Care Services.
“What better way to start the Yuletide season and spread magical fairy dust and Christmas Spirit than by watching a traditional pantomime,” added Shirley.
“We are delighted to be performing for local schools and the Malvern community. Our pantomime is a new adaptation of the traditional fairytale which we know everyone will enjoy. The original production started in Malvern” says Kirsty, “the first performance of The Snow Queen was performed by The Malvern Theatre Players on the stage at Malvern Theatres, and the original script adaption was written by local writer Harriet Demoy. I am grateful to the estate of Harriet Demoy and the MTP for allowing us to adapt Harriet’s script for today’s audiences” finished Kirsty.
