Join us on Saturday 13 June for a series of special events at Astwood Cemetery as part of Love Your Burial Ground Week – Count on Nature, a national initiative organised by Caring for God’s Acre.
The week encourages people to explore local burial grounds not only as places of remembrance, but also as valuable spaces for wildlife, history and heritage.
? Events begin at 12pm with a Historic Walk and Talk led by Worcester City Council’s Senior Heritage and Conservation Officer, Sheena Payne-Lunn.
This 45-minute guided walk will uncover some of Astwood Cemetery’s fascinating history, highlighting historic features and sharing stories of notable Victorian Worcester residents laid to rest there.
? At 1pm, Worcester Environmental Group (WEG) will host a two-hour “Art in Nature” session, giving visitors the chance to explore the plants and wildlife around the cemetery through drawing and painting.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or just want to try something new, everyone is welcome. A local artist will be there to provide support and guidance. Please bring your own art materials if possible, though some supplies will be available.
? Also at 1pm, local photography group Digibox will lead a 45-minute photography session, sharing practical tips for capturing images of nature and wildlife before exploring the cemetery grounds with cameras in hand.
? Visitors are advised to dress for the outdoors and wear suitable footwear for uneven ground.
? Please note: there are currently no toilet facilities on site due to ongoing crematorium renovation works.
? All sessions will meet on the grassed area directly opposite the crematorium building.
