- **Event Description**: This seminar explores the intersection of mental health law, custodial practice & deaths in custody through film & socio-legal discussion.About this EventLeeds Law School's Centre for Justice, Law and Policy is pleased to invite you to this seminar, in partnership with Lung Theatre and the SLSA.Deaths in custody raise significant legal, institutional, and ethical questions about the state’s duty of care, accountability, and the treatment of people within custodial environments. This interdisciplinary seminar will explore how law, mental health, and institutional practice intersect in shaping responses to these deaths, and how research, practice, and lived experience can contribute to preventing future harm.The event will begin with two short films developed by LUNG Theatre, inspired by the play Woodhill. These films centre the experiences of families affected by deaths in custody and offer an important starting point for reflection on how loss, accountability, and institutional responsibility are experienced in practice.Building on these narratives, the seminar will bring together legal scholars, social scientists, and people with experience across law, health, social care, and custodial practice. Through film, a series of short papers, facilitated panel discussion, and collaborative reflection, attendees will explore key issues including the legal frameworks governing deaths in custody, the relationship between mental health and carceral environments, and the institutional practices that shape care and risk within custodial settings.Lunch and refreshments provided.Some travel bursaries are available for precarious and/or unaffiliated people.
