- **Event Description**: The difference between Gordon Bond's research about a train wreck and research that is a train wreck came down to some less obvious aspects of the researching and writing process. In this program, Bond will share some of what he learned while researching his book "Man Failure: The Story of New Jersey's Deadliest Train Wreck." Looking beyond the resources and tools most people already know about, he will examine the challenges specific to writing about more contemporary history and handling an inherently tragic and gruesome subject. Whether you're writing a book, a newsletter article, a documentary script, or museum exhibit text, seeing how other's approach "process" can be instructive!

Special guest speaker Gordon Bond, historian and author, will share his research process and insights from his acclaimed book Man Failure: The Story of New Jersey's Deadliest Train Wreck. Bond’s work investigates the tragic 1951 derailment of a Pennsylvania Railroad commuter train in Woodbridge, NJ—the deadliest rail disaster in New Jersey history. Through contemporary accounts, investigation transcripts, and interviews with survivors and families, Bond uncovers both the human stories and institutional failures behind the catastrophe. His presentation will illustrate how thorough, empathetic research can uncover hidden truths and preserve the memory of complex, emotional events.

This free program is open to the public and will include light refreshments and a guided site tour as part of the event. Presented in partnership with the Historical Association of Woodbridge Township and Middlesex County, the program is made possible through the generous support of the Middlesex County Division of History & Historic Preservation.
