The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a nonprofit veterans service organization that was founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection12. The VFW’s mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, serve our veterans, the military and our communities, and advocate on behalf of all veterans3.
The VFW has several objectives, including:
Speeding rehabilitation of the nation’s disabled and needy veterans.
Assisting veterans’ widows and orphans and the dependents of needy or disabled veterans.
Promoting Americanism by means of education in patriotism and by constructive service to local communities4.
The VFW has approximately 1.5 million members, including eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard, and reserve forces5. The organization has been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, developing the national cemetery system, fighting for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange, and securing expanded educational benefits for America’s active duty service members.
