​Hidden Sounds of the Americas is a journey through the sonic geography from Alaska to Patagonia, blending traditional music and contemporary compositions that, through an immersive audiovisual experience, unite ancestral sounds to cutting-edge technology alongside indigenous masks and dances.

Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and New Technologies will give a public lecture on Monday, April 27th at 1 p.m. in the Rhododendron Room on the fifth floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center at UVA Wise. The lecture is free and open to all, and co-sponsored by Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise. Hidden Sounds of the Americas is a journey through the sonic geography from Alaska to Patagonia, blending traditional music and contemporary compositions that, through an immersive audiovisual experience, unite ancestral sounds to cutting-edge technology alongside indigenous masks and dances. 

The lecture is designed as a didactic presentation that combines live demonstrations and interactive moments to engage students in an accessible and dynamic way. The orchestra will introduce pre-Hispanic instruments through short performances and explanations, discuss their relationship to ancient cultures of the Americas, and present how they integrate them with contemporary technologies. The presentation will also offer a clear and engaging overview of their work at Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, linking music, research, and creativity. They will also connect this experience to their performance work, Hidden Sounds of the Americas, and to their documentary OIANT – Music for an Ancestral Future, helping students understand the broader context of the project.

The lecture features replicas of unknown pre-Columbian instruments recovered from archaeological museums as well as from indigenous communities in the Amazonas, the Andes, and Mesoamerica.

The lecture is co-sponsored by Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise.
