The Program in Maritime Studies partnered with the Maritime Archaeology Society (MAS) in Finland for the Fall Field School during October 2025. Their main purpose is “to promote and support scientific and recreational activities in maritime archaeology and to improve citizens’ awareness of [Finnish] underwater cultural heritage”. MAS citizen scientists identify wreck sites using oral history, online historical repositories, and other field methods. The Baltic Sea features thousands of shipwrecks from the 1250s to the 1700s preserved due to the low salt content and the absence of the shipworm. Some of MAS key achievements include generating an open access database of over 100 3D models of wrecks using photogrammetry. This provided our ECU team with a significant baseline and starting point for hypotheses about the identity of shipwrecks, site formation process, and brainstorming about future directions in fieldwork and research.  Each one of the reconnaissance sites the field school team documented yielded a historical vignette contributing to the maritime landscape of warfare and commerce within the Baltic Archipelago.  These included shipwrecks associated with Finnish War (1808-1809) and the local Baltic region economy of limestone quarries and silver mines.
