About the event

Carved Confectionary Molds
For hundreds of years and in dozens of cultures, carved wooden molds have been used to make delicious sweet foods even more mouth-watering. Join artist and anthropologist Julia Harrison for a look back at the historic molded cakes, candies, and cookies enjoyed in Canada and the United States. Learn where these traditions came from, how mold-carving practices evolved in North America, and how skilled woodcarvers allowed bakers and cooks to add beauty and meaning to treats such as gingerbread, springerle, maple sugar candy, and New Year’s Cake. Shea will also offer suggestions for making molded confections a part of your family’s next celebration.
