- **Event Name**: Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith Legislative Update
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 18 May, 2025 at 02:00 pm – Sun, 18 May, 2025 at 04:00 pm
- **Event Description**: This month we feature Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith (D) for our 2025 Legislative Update. He has proven himself to be an advocate for secular values and we look forward to hearing about the hard work of keeping religion out of government. Carlos Guillermo Smith made history with his election in November 2016 becoming Florida’s first openly-LGBTQ Latin-x state lawmaker just 5 months after the tragedy at Pulse nightclub. He was subsequently re-elected in 2018 and 2020. In 2024 he was elected to serve in the Florida Senate.

Carlos lives in Orlando with his husband Jerick Mediavilla, an educator from Corozal, Puerto Rico. Carlos has brought back millions of dollars in state funding to his community for wounded combat veterans, first responders and those affected by the Pulse nightclub tragedy while also leading a successful effort to boost funding by 800% to 480 arts and culture non-profits across Florida. In addition to being named Florida PTA Legislator of the Year in 2020, Carlos is a respected LGBTQ civil rights leader who has championed cannabis reform and workers’ rights. In 2017, Senator Smith co-founded and elected to Chairman of the Legislative Progressive Caucus, a position he continues to hold today.

Carlos has used his voice to champion civil rights, cannabis reform, gun safety, debt-free college, mental health, and animal welfare. Orlando Magazine has repeatedly named Carlos as one of Orlando’s 50 Most Powerful People and he has been honored by organizations such as the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters of Florida, the Florida PTA, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and the LGBTQ+ Center Orlando for his public service and advocacy. Senator Smith currently serves on the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee, State Affairs Committee (serving as Democratic Ranking Member), Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee, Professions & Public Health Subcommittee (serving as Democratic Ranking Member), Government Operations Subcommittee, and the Insurance & Banking Subcommittee.
