For generations, Silver Springs has been one of Florida’s most famous attractions. But during the Jim Crow era and beyond, Black visitors were excluded from many of the experiences available to white tourists. From 1949 to 1969, Paradise Park offered Black families a place to swim, picnic, listen to music, gather with friends and family, and experience the famous Silver Springs glass-bottom boats. While Paradise Park existed because of an unjust system, the memories of those who visited it tell a much larger story of family, community, resilience, and joy. Join us for a screening of SAME WATER, a short documentary exploring Black leisure, memory, exclusion, and environmental history at Silver Springs. Following the film, historian and author Cynthia Wilson-Graham will share the history behind Paradise Park, and filmmaker Martine Granby will join us live via Zoom for a conversation about the film and its creation, followed by an audience Q&A. Drawing on photographs, archival research, oral histories, and the voices of people who experienced Paradise Park firsthand, Wilson-Graham will take us beyond the familiar story of Silver Springs to explore a part of Florida history that was nearly lost. Wilson-Graham is co-author, with Lu Vickers, of Remembering Paradise Park: Tourism and Segregation at Silver Springs. Her years of research and advocacy helped restore public awareness of Paradise Park and contributed to the installation of an official Florida Historical Marker commemorating the site. She continues working to preserve local Black history through the Black History Museum of Marion County and community memory projects. Granby is a nonfiction filmmaker, producer, video journalist, and Assistant Professor of Journalism at the University of Connecticut, where she focuses on documentary filmmaking. Her work spans documentary, experimental nonfiction, hybrid, and essay forms, with particular interest in archives, memory, and the ethical use of found footage. SAME WATER premiered at the True/False Film Festival and has also screened at the Florida Film Festival. Together, the film, conversation, and Q&A will explore two legacies connected by the same water—and what their stories can teach us about segregation, tourism, race, public memory, and everyday life in Florida. ---- To help with expenses for this event, we suggest a per-person donation for those not already supporting with a recurring monthly donation.
