Join Ash Alberg (Manitoba, Canada) and Dr. Samuel Bautista Lazo (Oaxaca, México) for a hands-on natural dyeing workshop. Working with dyes grown and harvested both in Manitoba and Oaxaca, you'll spend the evening learning techniques and lessons from two land-based textile artists/educators/researchers. Participants will dye organic cotton hankies with cochineal and local flowers to take home. Samuel (he/him/el) is an Indigenous Oaxacan (Benizaa/Zapotec) weaver, storykeeper, and natural dyer from Xiguie'a (Teotitlán del Valle). Ash (they/them) is a descendent of settlers (Polish/Scottish) who grew up on Treaty 1 territory and co-creates with local plants as a natural dye artist-educator, currently pursuing their PhD in the Faculty of Education. The pair co-conspire on various projects centered around material and ancestral knowledges with more-than-human kin, collaborating across cultures and landscapes.
