To celebrate the new addition and the remarkable paleontological discoveries being made in the area, the museum will host a special public presentation with dinosaur expert Anthony Maltese on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

The original Furcatoceratops specimen was discovered by a field crew in 2012 and formally named as a new species in 2023. The herbivorous dinosaur lived during the Late Cretaceous Period approximately 75.6 million years ago and is estimated to have measured about 11.5 feet long.

Its name, Furcatoceratops, translates roughly to “forked horn face,” referring to the distinctive shape and orientation of its brow horns.

The September presentation will go well beyond the museum's newest dinosaur. Maltese will discuss the different species of dinosaurs that have been discovered in the Winifred area, the significance of the Judith River Formation, and what these fossils are revealing about the prehistoric animals that once inhabited what is now central Montana.

Members of the public will also have an opportunity to ask Maltese questions following the presentation.

The new Furcatoceratops exhibit provides a striking reminder that some internationally significant pieces of prehistoric history aren't being discovered in faraway places—they are being uncovered in the hills and badlands surrounding communities like Winifred.

The Winifred Museum invites residents from throughout Fergus County and central Montana, as well as families, students, educators and dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages, to attend the September event and learn more about the extraordinary prehistoric history found in their own backyard.
