Inspired by Muriel Ahmarani Jaouich: An Archaeology of Echoes, this workshop brings family, memory, and mending together through fabric and thread. Participants will begin with a short tour of the exhibition, reflecting on themes of connection and movement.Afterward, participants will work with artist Lisa Sylvestre to transform a family photo printed on fabric into a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Using embroidery techniques, participants will stitch directly into their photos, weaving in new patterns, textures, and stories – repairing and reimagining memory through embroidery.
Participants are asked to email c2hpbmNoIHwgYXJ0d2luZHNvcmVzc2V4ICEgY2E= one (1) family photo at least 3 days before the workshop. The images will be printed in advance for participants to use during the workshop.
Lisa Sylvestre lives and works in Windsor/Detroit. Her work as a multimedia artist is informed by an academic background in the social sciences, and formal training both in tailoring and in photography. Her primary focus is textiles, particularly quilt making. Lisa, under asil, runs a textile + a dye studio where she teaches fibre based and natural dye classes and workshops, hosts a weekly community sewing circle, and curates the asil Gallery and Shop which brings together talented local artists.
The Seniors Council is supported by the Seniors Community Grant Program.
