A 6-mile snowshoe hike with 1,800' of elevation up & down at Blackhead Mountain in the Catskills.

Bring your own snowshoes and microspikes, or add rentals for the day - $15 for snowshoes and/or $5 for microspikes. We will have varied sizes to choose from at the beginning of the hike.

Blackhead Mountain, one of the 3500'+ peaks (actually 3,940') that you must do twice to join the Catskill 3500 Club (at least once during the winter), might be a mile shy of the distance we hike on our other challenging snowshoe hike, Hunter Mountain, but we're upping the technical difficulty by adding some varied terrain and scrambles into the mix. This snowshoe hike has "Challenging+" in the name for a reason - namely that there are some areas of extreme steepness, scrambles, and exposed rock faces. Of course, we will be there for safety and to help all along the way. If you've done our Hunter snowshoe and/or are looking for the next challenge, then be prepared for incredible winter views and fun scrambles!

We'll take this challenging snowshoe hike at a leisurely pace, so bring a thermos of soup or hot chocolate to enjoy up top while we take pictures. On the way, we’ll discuss winter gear, hydration and water procurement, shelter options for planned and unplanned winter nights out, clothing options, moisture management, and other winter topics. Plan to make more memories!

Many TBPers with longer drives go up the night before to stay at one of the many local hotels or campgrounds.

Prerequisite: No experience necessary, just a fitness level for 6 miles, 1,800' of elevation, and being up for some winter scrambles.

Although we're hoping for lots of snow to make it a snowshoeing wonderland, the weather is completely unpredictable. If we end up with less-than-ideal snowy conditions, we'll still have a great time with microspikes and go over winter hiking best practices and skills, such as how to dress, the different gear we carry, and other seasonal trip planning considerations to make winter hiking just as comfortable and enjoyable as the rest of the year.

Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
